The Refugee Pathway¶
The typical Zomi refugee journey:
Chin State, Myanmar
โ (conflict, persecution)
Malaysia or India
(first asylum โ 5-10 years)
โ (UNHCR resettlement)
USA / Australia / Canada / UK / Europe
(third-country resettlement)
This pathway means Zomi communities are constantly growing in resettlement countries while being replenished by new arrivals in asylum countries.
Tracking Challenges¶
Accurate tracking is difficult because:
- No central census for ethnic Zomi across countries
- Different names โ Zomi, Chin, Kuki, Mizo are counted separately
- Undocumented refugees โ many in Malaysia and India are not registered
- Internal migration โ within Myanmar and India, people move for work
- Second-generation โ children born in diaspora may not be counted
