The Refugee Pathway

The typical Zomi refugee journey:

Chin State, Myanmar
       โ†“ (conflict, persecution)
  Malaysia or India
  (first asylum โ€“ 5-10 years)
       โ†“ (UNHCR resettlement)
  USA / Australia / Canada / UK / Europe
  (third-country resettlement)

This pathway means Zomi communities are constantly growing in resettlement countries while being replenished by new arrivals in asylum countries.

Tracking Challenges

Accurate tracking is difficult because:

  • No central census for ethnic Zomi across countries
  • Different names โ€“ Zomi, Chin, Kuki, Mizo are counted separately
  • Undocumented refugees โ€“ many in Malaysia and India are not registered
  • Internal migration โ€“ within Myanmar and India, people move for work
  • Second-generation โ€“ children born in diaspora may not be counted
