The US has the largest Zomi diaspora outside Asia, primarily through refugee resettlement since the 1990s.

Malaysia is a common first asylum country for Chin refugees fleeing Myanmar. Most are UNHCR-registered.

The Refugee Pathway¶
The typical Zomi refugee journey:
Chin State, Myanmar

This pathway means Zomi communities are constantly growing in resettlement countries while being replenished by new arrivals in asylum countries.
Tracking Challenges¶
Accurate tracking is difficult because:
- No central census for ethnic Zomi across countries
- Different names – Zomi, Chin, Kuki, Mizo are counted separately
- Undocumented refugees – many in Malaysia and India are not registered
- Internal migration – within Myanmar and India, people move for work
- Second-generation – children born in diaspora may not be counted
